Success brings Crimson Room Reverse to PSP

It started out as a simple Flash game, but eventually, it became a huge success earning a big following. Now, Crimson Room is being hailed as probably one of the best Flash games to have ever flashed the gaming world.

That's why it's no wonder that Success is bringing the game over to the PSP handheld this December. Although, unfortunately, it's gonna be for Japan only. Again. Le sigh. But we digress. Crimson Room Reverse is actually a port of the DS version released last year as part of their Superlite 2500 Series.

But just because it's a port doesn't mean it won't have anything new to it. The PSP version will have new scenarios and a "Reverse" Scenario, which are all supervised by the brains behind the game himself, Toshiyuki Tagaki.

Anyway, if you're intrigued by this game but has got no idea what it's about, better head on out and play the Flash game itself.

XlinkKai 7.4.1.5 Out

It's been a while since we last covered any XLink Kai releases, but today we're making up for it thanks to the release of version 7.4.15.

The beta version of XLink Kai 7.4 was released about a week ago, but so far version 7.4 has yet to be finalized. This new release contains a number of bug fixes and further enhances the app's usability for Japanese users. Here's a rundown of what's new:

* Updated: OS X Universal binary (PPC and Intel support for OX 10.4 and above)
* Fixed: Internet Explorer 6 support in the Web UI
* Fixed: Japanese installations with Netmon driver installed.
* Fixed: engine crash when using /orb command

Dark AleX releases 1.50 add-on for CFW 4.01 M33

We'll keep this short and simple, folks. After releasing CFW 4.01 M33 yesterday, Dark AleX has followed things up with today's arrival of the 1.50 kernel add-on for 4.01 M33.

For those new to the whole PSP homebrew scene, the 1.50 kernel add-on essentially lets you run homebrew written for firmware 1.50. All you have to do to enable it is copy it to your PSP's memory stick and run it. More instructions can be found in the bundled readme notes.

Anyway, that's it. You can download the add-on below. To those who upgraded (or will be upgrading) to 4.01 M33, enjoy the new custom firmware.

Custom firmware update 4.01 M33-2 out now

It's a bit of a busy weekend for the hardcore PSP homebrew fans. We've only just reported on the 1.50 kernel add-on for CFW 4.01 M33, and now Dark AleX has let loose an update for Team M33's latest custom PSP firmware.

The 4.01 M33-2 update, comes with the following bugfixes:

* Nids resolver: Fixed scePowerGetCpuClockFrequency issue. This is the same bug that happened in 3.80 M33-1, it won't happen again ¬¬
* Fixes recovery problems that have appeared in prior version (incorrect position of back string in language others than english, enable, and disabled strings not translated in plugins, hide pic0 pic1 couldn't be changed, language file in flash1 wasn't working..
* Spanish recovery translation typos fixed.

The download awaits below. You can also upgrade to 4.01 M33-2 via CFW 4.01 M33's Network Update function. You can never be too careful, so make sure that you know what you're doing before running this update. Don't forget to read the readme. Dark AleX releases PSP CFW 4.01 M33; 1.50 kernel add-on to follow

It's finally here! Dark Alex and the rest of Team M33 have been popping in and out lately with their messages about creating a new custom firmware. While their previous release had CFW 3.90, the release of the official 4.01 FW prompted them to follow suit with one of their very own.

In comes CFW 4.01 M33 with the following changes:

* Bug fix: vshmenu didn't let change camera mode due to camera_plugin using select button. Fixed, now vsh menu will not be loaded when using the camera.
* Recovery can now be translated, See how below. Translation to spanish is autoincluded.
* Updated the M33 SDK with a new function and sample, and released the psp-packer tool to compress prx's and PBP's in the ~PSP format.
* The folder of 4.01 and highre homebrew will be GAME4XX so it won't need change on update.

Make sure you take a look at the readme for installation procedures and other notes form Dark AleX and Team M33. The team also notes that the 1.50 kernel add-on will be released in a few hours, so make sure you check back on that. In the mean time, update your CFW!

Team M33 officially says 'Bye Bye!' to 1.50 kernel

Over on Dark AleX's website, it seems we're about to give a fond farewell to the kernel that's been a part of the homebrew scene for the longest time: the 1.50 kernel.

Alek, one of the admins of dark-alex.org, posted a recent entry detailing the means by which one could adapt what they know into the 3.xx kernel era. In his entry, he writes,

Due to the almost sure probability to abandon 1.50 kernel on future releases 'cause of better compatibility and security on 3.xx/4.xx, some new devs were asking me how to port their knowledges to 3.xx kernel, and of course also their own apps.

He advises them to visit this particular ps2dev entry by CpuWhiz (external link) in the hopes of porting what they've already done to 3.xx functionality. Furthermore, he explains,

But anyway, does this change to superior kernels is necessary? Indeed it is. It allows a greater range of thinks (sic) that can be done, plus solving tons of problems on 1.5 kernels. Therefore, having the oportunity (sic) to use this ones with the actual cfws, why not to do so? Open to debate.

It's an exciting time for the homebrew scene, seeing as there's new technology coming out and people are learning to adapt to the new ways of doing things. While most people will certainly miss what can be called "the good old days," we can certainly look forward to what homebrewers have in store for us using the newer kernels.

Sony announces minor update: official PSP firmware 4.01

As a follow up to the release of the official firmware 4.00 for the PlayStation Portable, Sony announced that firmware revision 4.01 will be released shortly. The new update is simply geared toward the features newly introduced in FW 4.00, which is the Google Search function and the slowdown/speed-up of movie playback. The changes to be expected are just as numerous as last time:

* Display of search results under Internet Search has been improved for certain languages.
* Playback of video content under Video has been improved for certain file types.

Sony calls this only a "minor update," which seems apt given the small increment in revision number. We believe that the update should arrive close to midnight, though it could be that some regions are updating already.

As for those more concerned about homebrew, we hardly believe that this update could push back the release of Custom Firmware 4.00 M33, lest 4.01 be the new revision number to attain. But we still expect some word to crop up from Team M33 regarding the new development from Sony. More on that as we get them.

*UPDATE*: It's up and about, folks. This one comes from the members of QJ.NET's forums, who've confirmed that the PSP's auto-update checking routine prompted them to go official. From here on out, the choice is yours. And no, we haven't heard of added DivX support either.

CXMB Released For 3.95GEN

To get the support prx files to make the 3.95 Ctf take these steps:

Download RS PsarDumper 3.3 + Official firmware 3.95,
Connect your PSP to your computer via USB,
Put your PSP in “USB Mode”,
Extract the files you downloaded,
Decrypt the 3.95 eboot and put the prx’s named "common_gui.prx", "paf.prx", "vshmain.prx" that you dumped from the 3.95 eboot into the support folder inside the CXMB folder just like older CXMB.

4.00M33 to be released End of this Week

Dark AleX' recent blog post has clued us all in to a tentative release date for Custom Firmware 4.00 M33, which if met under optimal conditions, will allow us to see the CFW hit the Internet download portals by the end of this week.

But the early arrival of the first 4.00 M33 comes at another condition: the development of the features promised - the in-XMB recovery and savestates - may not be fully implemented all at once.

Dark AleX says that updates would soon roll for the homebrew developer's CFW, and you're likely to see those everything working with M33-2 or later.

And since the Team M33 is now picking up on the firmware that Sony fell short of, the developers are willing to go the extra mile. Now they'll be addressing issues of shell compatibility and internally induced hiccups (homebrew app crashed by homebrew app), and a built-in prx and pbp utility to boot.

PSP CFW 4.00 to include in-XMB recovery mode, savestate support

With the code for Sony's official PlayStation Portable Firmware 4.0 already decrypted, it's only a matter of time before the next custom firmware finds its way into the community. To prove this point, homebrew developer Mathieulh recently revealed some of the new features that will be added into the upcoming Custom Firmware 4.00 that Dark AleX and team M33 are already working on.

One of the new features include an in-XMB recovery mode, which will allow users to change their settings straight from the PSP's main menu screen. This is definitely beats rebooting your PSP and entering recovery mode the normal way.

The other feature is the inclusion of savestate support for UMD games. Users will now be able to save their progress at any given time during gameplay and be able to load their game at that point after restarting. It has not yet been confirmed if the savestate feature will be integrated directly into the firmware or will be released as a separate plugin.

That's all the info we have for now on Custom Firmware 4.00, but we'll be sure to post more updates as we get them.

Mathieulh's update on Utopia: project goes public soon

QJ.NET reader Mark M gave us a heads-up on a hot update posted earlier by Mathieulh over at the Lan.st forums. The Utopia kernel seems to be closing in on a release and it'll be just a matter of time before the public finally sees what it can do.

These are the main points in Mathieulh's Utopia post as he detailed what he and Silverspring have decided so far:

* The utopia official forums will be hosted among the lan.st forums.
* The public release of utopia has been decided and will take effect as soon as I find time to setup the svn and forum sections.
* Despite the project going public, the project is not done yet, thus you cannot (yet) compile a whole kernel from the soon to be supplied sources. We are looking forward seeing people contributing to complete the utopia project.
* What we do not know about yet is if utopia will use GPL license or BSD but it is likely to be BSD.
* The svn will be readable by everyone but only a few trusted people will be able to update it (so people do not start messing up with the svn by deleting changes or adding irrelevant ones). If you want to contribute to the utopia project you will have to send your code to the forums where it will be added by the staff to the svn later. People who often contribute to utopia will be granted write access to the svn as well.

If you're not familiar on what exactly Utopia does, it's to be an open source PSP kernel designed specifically for homebrew and development. It's going to use up over 1MB of RAM, perhaps 2MB at most. It's going to be fully documented and divided into two parts: one for developers (who need debugging tools, SDK) and one for homebrewers who want to run software on their PSP designed with it.

"Once completed and stable the utopia kernel is to be implemented as a new operative mode in future custom firmwares," posts Mathieulh.

Lastly, here's what Utopia can and can't do, according to Mathieulh:

* Utopia is not meant to run Sony's code, thus current homebrews or games wont run on it.
* Utopia will not feature UMD drive support of any kind.
* Utopia will not feature any kind of DRM functionalities (at least this is not planned)
* Utopia will most likely not feature any kirk engine support.
* Wlan is planned but not a priority at this point.
* No vsh or graphic interface of any kind is to be included in utopia or officially supported by the utopia project. Utopia is ONLY the kernel,
if you want to code your own shell on top of it, feel free to do so.
* The utopia kernel is NOT based on Linux, freebsd or any other open source project (unlike uClinux for exemple) , it is based on the 3.71 IPL reverse engineering. (and later on existing kernel modules reverse)

PSP Firmware 4.0 decrypted: PRX changes, minimal problems for CFW development

The team that brought us Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN was able to look into the resource directory of Firmware 4.0's flash0 resource directory, revealing a bunch of PRXs that have been changed.

They note these PRXs among those that have been changed: pops popsman, npdrm, np9660, mlnbridge, sysmem, umdcache, sysconf, and video. They also point out that the NIDS doesn't seem to have been changed.

Good news is that they don't think that any of the changes will pose too much of a problem for developing Custom Firmwares, and they believe that one will be introduced soon.

Sony releases official PSP Firmware 4.00 For Euro not for US yet

Sony ushered in the next update to the PlayStation Portable, and if you haven't already checked, you'd find that you've been prompted to update to the spanking brand new PSP firmware 4.00. Now while it's a major step up in revision number, the update seems a little too conservative.

Aside from getting a new Internet search feature, media buffs on the PSP will also get the option of slowing down or speeding up playback of movies. According to the official changelog, you'll be able to do so by using the up and down buttons on the D-pad.

That's about it for now. We're still updating our own handhelds, so we haven't tested these features out yet. Stay tuned for more updates.

[Internet Search] has been added as a feature. You can now perform an Internet search directly from the PSP Home Menu.

Secret Agent Clank: Everything you need to know

It's June 17, folks - the day High Impact Games' Secret Agent Clank officially makes its way to the stores and, with a little luck, to your PlayStation Portables. That said, you may want to read up on Everything You Need to Know for the game, just to give you an idea of what to expect (in case you haven't tried the demo yet).

This game is set after the events of Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters (PSP), and right before Tools of Destruction. As a twist, you'll be playing through the game mostly as Clank, with Ratchet currently behind bars. What would a hero like him be doing in the slammer? More on that as we tackle the game details.

Clank
Clank....Agent Clank. Ratchet's long-time robotic buddy will be stepping into the spotlight, donning his super spy persona from Up Your Arsenal on the PS2. The mission - if he chooses to accept it - is to uncover the mystery behind the stolen Eye of Infinity and to clear Ratchet's name.

As compared to the past Ratchet & Clank games, the missions in Secret Agent Clank will be a transition from explosions to espionage, with a premium being placed on stealth and coordination. And it's not just evident in Clank's new tux either: he'll be getting some new tools and tricks to help him along on this adventure. We'll discuss more of that later. In any case, Clank's definitely come a long way from being a glorified backpack.

Ratchet"...being a hero really doesn't pay." Those were the last words this ex-Galactic Hero uttered before being carted off by the authorities after his failed attempt to steal the Eye of Infinity. So, did Ratchet really turn to a life of crime? If those little red electrodes on his noggin imply anything, it's that there is more to this heist than meets the eye.

While Clank's off to solve this caper, Ratchet's segment of the game will have him trying to survive a maximum security prison which, unfortunately, also houses the previous villains he defeated.

Much like the previous games, expect plenty of straightforward blasting for this Lombax's side story, with each level set as multiple stages featuring wave after wave of thugs and other nasties. A bit overwhelming perhaps, but that just means more opportunities to test out your new toys, and to save up those ever-essential bolts.

Qwark:
Guess what - Qwark finally gets a slice of the hero pie. Well, sort of: his segment of Secret Agent Clank will have him narrating his past adventures. Given this is Qwark we're talking about, expect him to add his own self-glorifying twist to the events, which will actually tie into your gameplay, with humorous results. Here's a teaser video of one of his boss battles to give you an idea of what we mean.

Godzilla and ninjas. Giant robot ninjas. That explode. Yup - feel free to throw historical accuracy out the window here folks, though admittedly, it makes for good entertainment.

Stealth
Much like some other sneaky operatives we know, Secret Agent Clank will require the player to master the art of staying to the shadows. While you've got tons of neat gadgets and moves working in your favor, it's best to avoid conflict whenever possible to save both your health bar and ammunition.

One neat way Clank can sneak around is by using his surroundings - certain objects such as statue pedestals and potted plants (a spy classic) will allow you to conceal your presence from the guards.

Clank-Fu
Not that Clank's completely unarmed. While Ratchet's got his tried-and-true wrench, Clank will be using "Clank-fu," a strange mix of karate chops and flying kicks that'll leave even the toughest of thugs down and out. Clank-fu can be upgraded by purchasing new moves, much in the same way you buy new weapons.

Of course, not all of your most damaging attacks are done head-on. If you can successfully sneak up on your target, you can also initiate a quick coup de grace by way of a button combo. Think Kratos' kill sequences from God of War, minus the gore.

Another new stealth-based game mechanic that's getting introduced is the rhythm-based obstacle courses. Here, players are prompted to activate a long series of Guitar Hero-style button combos to allow Clank to successfully clear certain challenges, which can range from dancing around laser grids, to taking out unsuspecting sentries.

Dressed to Kill: Agent Clank's bag of tricks

Clank's getting a whole new retinue of gear for this game, most of which are disguised as seemingly harmless parts of his tuxedo. For example, there's the Tie-A-Rang, a shuriken-style weapon that can be used to either assassinate foes from afar, or to slice plot-related objects, such as cables. As for the rest or Clank's weapons (via the Ratchet & Clank wiki):

PSP Firmware 4.00 coming soon: includes Google Search, change video playback speed

We don't have a specific date for it yet, but according to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, the PSP's official firmware 4.00 update "will be released soon." How soon? We can only hope.

What can we expect from FW 4.00? According to Lempel, the upgrade will have a new Google Internet Search feature, accessible straight from the XMB. It uses Google's algorithms so it will return the exact same results as www.google.com.

The feature returns a search history recall of 20 items. Of course, you'll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot before you can actually Google something.

Another feature inlcuded in Firmware 4.00 is the ability to speed up or slow down the playback speed of videos stored on the unit's Memory Stick. All you need to do for this is to press up or down while playing the video.

PSP mod with L2, R2 shoulder buttons

Some games from the PSOne era are just too irresistible to pass up on your PSP, but sadly, the lack of the L2 and R2 buttons (and, of course, the right-side analog stick) on the handheld somewhat prevents the more sentimental of us to play them.

While there are other ways to map the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons on the PSP, some of us might want to go retro and actually physically have the buttons right there on top. In comes Acid Mods member Electro who shows us how to work around this little problem.

The modder was able to hook up two mini shoulder buttons on the PSP Phat as stand-ins for the L2 and R2. "This MOD is for the fat PSP, but you can do the same on the Slim," clarifies Electro, "Although I would never take my Slim apart. :P"

PSPWrite v1.0.5 - fixed IR keyboard issue for PSP Fat CFW 3.xx

It seems like developer Zx-81 finally got around to update the PlayStation Portable homebrew text editor project, PSPWrite. Although it's been months since the last update, this latest build introduces several new features to the program that made the wait worthwhile.

Let's get right down to the meat of the matter. Here are the details of latest changelog for PSPWrite v1.0.5:

New graphics based on hackePeter work
Add eboot's music
The virtual keyboard is now usable in the file requester menu
Fix IR keyboard issue with fw >= 3.80 for PSP FAT
Reduce default PSP clock speed (133 Mhz is good enough to write text)

PSPWrite v1.0.5 was developed for both custom firmware 1.5 and 3.90 M33. IR keyboard support was tested using a Targus Universal IR Wireless keyboard. For more details on how to install the app into your handheld, check out the Readme.txt file included in the file bundle.

Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN-2 released

We've all been waiting for it and it's here on the dot. PSP Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN-2 has been released by its devs over at PSPGEN and we've got the download and the changelog just for you.

As promised, fixes have been made to address issues from the previous version. Installation notes have also been listed below by the devs to make everything easier for you.

Changes

Fixed issue which crashed the PSP if you had vshmenu mode 'None'.
Fixed SNES emulator issues, now works fine.
Fixed few homebrew issues with the Slim.
Last version of the SNES emulator, PSPTube and many other homebrew using ME now work fine.

Installation instructions

For everyone who wants to install 3.95 GEN, you must be on at least 3.71M33.

Download the package with 3.95 GEN and the popsloader.
Note: When installing, all your plug-ins will be disabled.
Connect your PSP to your computer via USB.
Extract the file you downloaded by right clicking and choosing the option 'Extract Files To...'.
Extract the files to your PSP's assigned letter (for example, X).
Leave USB Mode

Pimp your PSP: XMBeditor v2 for 3.90 M33

The homebrew application previously called PSP Wardrobe, XMBeditor is now moving along into a fresh direction. Homebrew coder Mr_Shizzy has pimped up his little "pimp my XMB" tool: while it was an XMB theme and mod manager before, it now allows you to go even deeper and manipulate a lot more XMB configurations.

XMBeditor is now actually in its second version. One of the biggest changes is that it's now fully compatible with the PSP Phat. Other than that, here are the other details listed in the changelog:

Sony Computer Entertainment UK product manager: LocoRoco 2 out by this year

Claire Backhouse, product manager for Sony Computer Entertainment UK, recently gave out quite a number of details regarding their upcoming titles for the PlayStation Portable. She also let slip that LocoRoco 2 will be coming by this year.

In an interview with MCV, Backhouse said that "the key software titles we have coming out this year for PSP include Echochrome, Buzz The Master Quiz, Secret Agent Clank, and LocoRoco 2." Could this be the confirmation of the rumors that we have been hearing so much about?

We'd have to say, no. She didn't mention what she meant by "year". This could mean either the current year (2008) or Sony's fiscal year which extends all the way until early 2009. We'll be keeping an eye out for more news on this so remember to keep checking back here for any updates on this.

Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN released

The clock has finally struck midnight and developers behind the much awaited custom firmware 3.95 GEN have finally delivered on their promise to make this latest CFW available to the public.

As previously mentioned, CFW 3.95 GEN will be fully compatible with the PSP Fat models. Also, the VSHMENU from Popsloader, most of the functions of IRShell, and the CXMB were tested on the new CFW with limited success.

Here's the breakdown of CFW 3.95 GEN's changelog:

PlayStation Portable System Software is the official, updateable firmware for the PlayStation Portable. Updates add new functionality as well as security patches to prevent Homebrew (games) applications being run on the system. Updates can be obtained in four ways:

Direct download to the PSP over Wi-Fi. This can be performed by choosing "Settings", "Network Update" from the XMB. (with the exception of 3.96)
Download to a PC, then transfer to the PSP via a USB cable or Memory Stick. (With the exception of 3.96)
Included on the UMD of some games. These games may not run with earlier firmware than the version on their UMD.
Download from a PS3 to a PSP system via USB cable. (Japanese version only) (With the Exception of 3.96)

While system software updates can be used with consoles from any region, Sony recommends only downloading system software updates released for the region corresponding to the system's place of purchase. System software updates have added various features including a web browser, Adobe Flash Player support, additional codecs for images, audio, and video, PlayStation 3 connectivity, as well as patches against several security exploits, vulnerabilities, and execution of homebrew programs. If the power supply (Battery/AC) is disconnected while updating the system software, the console will be bricked. The system will have to be booted from a different source such as a battery in service mode with which it can be restored. The current firmware version is 4.00 released June 2008. The latest reported firmware version shipping pre-installed on new PSPs is 3.80

You can now quit Remote Play and choose to turn off your PS3 or leave it on after quitting. This is useful if you are performing a download and want to quit Remote Play, but still want your download to continue on the PS3. Select [Quit and Turn Off the PS3 System] or [Quit Without Turning Off the PS3 System] from [Quit Remote Play] when you press the HOME button on the PSP system.

Custom Firmware History

Custom firmwares used a subset of the commonly known 1.50 firmware to enable a newer custom firmware to run homebrew capabilities, while newer custom firmwares use a custom IPL to launch the firmware and patch it. On firmwares with 1.50 kernel installed, less used features are removed in newer versions including "LocationFree Player" and Korean fonts in order to gain flas0 space. The firmware adds support for 1.50 homebrew in addition to loading official Sony EBOOTs, integrating an ISO/CSO loader launched from the XMB game menu, and a recovery menu accessible upon boot-up. (Or accessible from the XMB in some firmwares)

1.50 Proof of Concept

On July 15 2006, a limited 1.50 custom firmware (named a proof of concept) was released by Dark AleX, allowing the execution of version 1.00 EBOOTs, access to a limited recovery mode, and ability to automatically load an application upon start. Other custom firmwares have since been released. Today, there are more developed versions such as "Casual V3" and the SE/OE/M33 firmwares.

2.71 SE (Special Edition)

On OCtober 8 2006, Dark AleX's custom firmware 2.71 SE-A was released, which utilizes the features of the 2.71 web browser, video features, RSS feeds, WMA capabilities and flash capabilities for the web browser as well as full 1.50 user and kernel homebrew usage and full 2.71 user and kernel homebrew, as well as adding a recovery mode for unbricking "Semi-Bricked" PSP from bad flashing etc. An update to this new custom firmware came out on the 24th of the same month. In this update the 2.71 SE-B the major feature is the loading of ISOs and CSOs from the game menu in the XMB. And just two days later was updated to 2.71 SE-B' which includes NO-UMD ISO loading. A few days later, 2.71 SE-B was released. It allowed the ability to run 2.80+ games, including GTA VCS and it fixed some bugs found in 2.71 SE-B'. The latest version is 2.71 SE-C, which allows to load PRX files directly from the memory stick, enabling the option to safely add new functions to the firmware. For example, listening to MP3 files while showing photos.

Epsilon Bios

On July 23 2006, a custom firmware, Epsilon Bios, was released for use with the Undiluted Platinum modchip. This firmware could only be used on PSPs with the modchip. This firmware resides on the modchip, while it "piggybacks" the firmware on the PSP's flash.

Open Edition Firmware

3.02 OE

On December 21 2006, a new custom firmware called "3.02 OE-A" was released by Dark AleX. It contains the same features of 2.71 SE-C, but also includes all 3.02 features excluding the Location Free player and the Korean fonts. New features added to this custom firmware include WMA and Flash Player enabling through the Recovery Menu and cracking the Digital Rights Management of the PSX emulator, allowing users to share PSX games to other PSP systems. On December 25 2006, an update to the 3.02 OE-A Firmware was released called "3.02 OE-B." Its main feature was the ability to run PSX games from a memory stick using a ripping utility called "popstation" released alongside the new firmware.

3.03 OE

On January 4 2007, the custom firmware "3.03 OE-A" was released by Dark AleX. It has the same features of 3.02 OE-B along with the ability to run compressed PSX games and support for custom manuals in PSX games. Later on January 6 2007, 3.03 OE-A' also known as 3.03 OE-A2 was released. A new feature in this release is the ability to change the CPU/Bus speed in UMD/ISO games. On January 10 2007, a "3.03 OE-B" custom firmware was released by Dark AleX. This custom firmware required 3.03 OE-A/A' firmware to be installed first. A new feature in this release is the ability to play full screen (480 X 272) H.264/MPEG-4 AVC|MP4-AVC videos. On January 25 2007, Dark AleX released "3.03 OE-C" custom firmware. This was a major update and thus required a full install. Among the features are using WiFi at 333 MHz, maximum bit-rate limit of MP4-AVC videos is raised from 768 kbit/s to 16384 kbit/s (16 Mbit/s), ability to change the CPU/Bus speed of the XMB, faster cold-boot, as well as several other new features.

3.10 OE

On February 4 2007, a "3.10 OE-A" custom firmware was released by Dark AleX, allowing screen brightness to the 4th level without having to connect the AC adapter along with the ability to run static Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) created homebrew with the 3.10 kernel. On February 6 2007, a "3.10 OE-A' / A2" update for 3.10 OE-A was released by Dark AleX, fixing a simple bug in the execution of PSP games including Metal Slug 6 and others. The bug was caused by the incorrect patching of a static ELF in some cases. This was only a minor update, however, and therefore was not needed by everyone running the custom firmware.

3.30 OE

3.30 OE-A was released on April 15 2007. It offers all past features from other custom firmwares, such as all features (except LocationFree Player) built into the official 3.30, functionality as well as 1.50 features, such as ISO/CSO loading and homebrew support. A 3.30 OE-A' update was released on April 20 2007. This release includes a fix to security bug that overwrites certain parts of the RAM and also reintroduces the auto-boot program feature.

3.40 OE

3.40 OE was released on April 20 2007. This release includes the same changes made in 3.30 OE-A' except it now uses the 3.40 firmware. It fixed a bug that caused data to be written to random addresses in the PSP's RAM. If the bug caused memory writes to certain kernel functions, the console could potentially be rendered unusable if those functions were accessed. Autoboot, which had been broken since 3.03 OE, was reimplemented. Improvements in the flasher were made to check that the correct DATA.DXAR file is used for an update, thus preventing people using incorrect firmware version data files from rendering their PSP units useless.

Increasing Edition versions

1.62 IE Custom Firmware

In March 2007, user becus25 released 1.62 IE-A. The latest version is 1.62 IE-D. Like custom firmware 1.53, it is based off the 1.5 kernel. Earlier versions of 1.62 IE would often cause bricks when the flash was modified. But updates were soon released fixing the problem. Currently though, 1.62 IE is only compatible with TA-079 motherboards and will brick on TA-082 and later motherboards. Features are similar to other firmwares including recovery mode, autoboot, and flash access. Becus25 has also modified the popular app by Booster, Devhook which allows firmwares to run from the memory stick, virtually removing the chance of bricking.

3.02 IE-A Custom Firmware

In July 2007, user becus25 released 3.02 IE-A which incorporated 3.02 OE with some improvements of IE. He later released an update which resolved certain bugs in the initial release.

3.40 IE Custom Firmware

Later in the month, becus25 released his modification of 3.40 OE which includes a new "recovery menu" to use along with the OE one, called 3.40 IE-A. Several days later, becus25 released 3.40 IE-A2, with less chance of bricking, and some bug fixes in the recovery menu. It was met with much negative feedback from the homebrew community, due to the fact that it was, essentially, useless. Because of this, as well as personal issues, becus25 quit making firmware and homebrew.

M33 Firmware

3.51 M33

On July 14, 2007, a team of Russian coders named "Team M33" (later to be revealed as Dark_AleX in disguise) released a custom firmware called "3.51 M33". This custom firmware was made by reverse engineering Dark AleX's custom firmwares, thus it includes all the original features of 3.XX-OE, but it runs 3.51 firmware, allowing users to play future games that will one day require 3.51 firmware. On July 18, 2007, Team M33 released an update called 3.51 M33-4. It added a new No-UMD ISO loading mode and added support for 1.50 plugin loading. It also included earlier bug fixes for ISO loading and WLAN. The next day, 3.51 M33-6 update was released. It added a new No-UMD ISO loading mode using the official ISO loader from Sony, bringing almost 100% No-UMD compatibility. To be compatible, the ISO/CSO in the memory stick has to have less than 56 characters. On July 21, 2007, 3.51 M33-7 was released, which included more bug fixes, mainly in the ISO-loading of various games, however also fixed brightness issues on TA-082/TA-086 motherboards when launching homebrew. A small WiFi patch was also included. 3.51 M33 Expansions and Patches Several developers have released expansions for 3.51 M33 which feature bugfixes and added features. For example, one such expansion, 3.51 LE-A or "Light Edition" added support for dumping the BOOT.BIN file from UMDs and flash dumping. Despite the flood of expansions made by other independent developers (e.g. becus25, pj1115, etc.).

3.52 M33

On July 25, 2007, Team M33 released an update to their custom firmware, dubbed 3.52 M33. This update now uses the 3.52 kernel, and the 3.52 firmware, and fixes a bug which prevented Go!Cam, GPS and sceKernelLoadExecVSH from working in GAME mode. It also improves No-UMD compatibility and allows official downloaded PSN titles to play properly, as they weren't supported by 3.51 M33 and some 3.XX OE custom firmwares. On July 30, 2007, Team M33 released an update to 3.52 M33, 3.52 M33-2. Changes are added to this firmware, which includes; Wi-Fi can work properly now, Chinese is available in the language section, added "Format flash1 and restore settings" option under Advanced, speed option 20 and 100 are added under CPU Speed, PSP cannot be turned off or hibernate in USB mode. document.dat (game manual) can be read in PSX games (was not possible in the first version). The update has also fixed compatibility issues with IRShell. (A popular homebrew program) On August 19, 2007, Team M33 released the third update to 3.52 M33, 3.52 M33-3. Changes are added to this firmware, which includes: USB access to flash2 and flash3, added processor speeds 75 and 133, added vshmenu which can be used to dump UMDs or access other storage areas from recovery or by pressing menu on XMB, added support for UMD video ISOs, added support for popsloader 3.30. There have been numerous reports of this update rendering owners' PSPs useless if any modifications are made to the update (bricking them). The person responsible for the update modification is the owner of the site ps3news.com. The owner of ps3news.com stole the m33 source code to prevent this from happening again the 3.52 M33-3 firmware was designed to brick psps with ps3news in the history of the internet browser. On August 21, 2007, Team M33 released the fourth edition of 3.52 M33, 3.52 M33-4. Changes are added to this firmware, which includes mainly bugfixes: Fixed the bug that caused CRC error when writing to flash USB in the XMB. The new speeds added in the third edition (75 MHz and 133 MHz) are actually accessible now via the vshmenu and core as they were (and still are) missing in the recovery menu.

3.60 M33

On September 10, 2007, Team M33 released custom firmware 3.60 M33 for the PSP Slim. It was released after the NAND of the PSP Slim was dumped. Due to incompatibilities with the new motherboard, 3.60 M33 does not contain a 1.50 kernel and thus cannot run homebrew written for 1.50. At the time, it could only run homebrew made for the 3.60 kernel but Team M33 stated they would make it compatible with 2.xx kernel homebrew in the near future (Team n00bz later released eLoader 1.000 which could run most homebrew requiring the 1.50 kernel on the PSP Slim). 3.60 M33 is installed by using a modified version of Pandora's Battery. Special files are written to the "magic" memory stick that is used in conjunction with the battery.

3.71 M33

On September 20, 2007, Team M33 announced that they would be taking "a break", due to the OE leak. The break didn't last long however, and Team M33 (who was revealed to be Dark_AleX along with a group of members) released 3.71 M33 on September 23, 2007 for the original PSP-1000 and the PSP Slim PSP-2000. Once again, 1.50 homebrew is incompatible on the slim, but a kernel patch has been released for the PSP-1000 allowing execution of 1.50 kernel mode homebrew. Also, due to kernel changes in the original firmware, many plugins made for previous firmwares are incompatible. A version 2 of both the 3.71 M33 and the 1.50 add-on were released on October 2, 2007. It fixed some bugs in the previous firmware. On November 8, 2007, Dark_AleX (Team M33) released version 3 of 3.71 again featuring various bug fixes along with an updater POPSloader to include POPS from FW3.71 and FW3.72. On December 12, 2007, Dark_Alex released update 4 for Firmware 3.71 along with a new multi-disc popsloader.

3.80 M33

On January 14, 2008, Team M33 released the 3.80 M33 Custom Firmware . This update features a new network update feature that when enabled will check for M33 firmware updates. When the feature is disabled through the recovery menu, the network update feature operates as it normally does checking for Sony firmware updates. Team M33 also released update 2 on the same day which fixes with scePowerGetClockFrequencyInt not being resolved properly. Update 2 also fixes a problem with the way PSX eboot icons are displayed if they are 80x80 pixels. A 1.50 Kernel update was also released. Update 3 was released on January 16, 2008; it fixed a synchronization issue that plugins check code cause in PSN NP9660 original games. It also added were a couple libs to the nids resolver and some internal changes required for the new version of the popsloader which was released on that same day. Update 4 was released on the same day to address a quick bugfix. Galaxy.prx was updated because it was causing a problem with slow memory sticks. Update 5 was released on January 20, 2008 that fixed the custom CPU clock not working in games. CPU clock has never (in any SE/OE/M33) be set at all in games that restarted using sceKernelLoadExec to use a subgame or reload themselves, after said restart happened (e.g. Castlevania). Update 5 also added setting to recovery to hide PIC0.PNG and PIC1.PNG in the XMB game menuBy default off, this setting only applies to any kind of apps/games (pbp, iso) that load from MS, but not to UMD's.

3.90 M33

Shortly after the 3.90 original firmware was released, 3.90 M33 was released on January 31, 2008. This uses the new 3.90 kernel, and M33 NO UMD was fixed (yet another bug related with exiting with home, infinite semaphore wait). There were also a few changes in the updater. The degeneration check and correction of IDS keys was implemented. Also, the code was added to the update that allowed download 390.PBP from Dark-alex.org via wifi. Also, L+triangle has been restored as the only way to bypass the battery, and 390.PBP checks. A 1.50 kernel addon was also released the same day. On February 13, 2008, revision 2 was released. This improved the plugin mode (improvements in reading speeds, and other bugs) added the rest of regions that can be faked in recovery. The ipl in Slims was patched so it can be allowed to boot with a Pandora Battery inserted. (With Booster's Multi-ipl or the TimeMachine ipl on the memory stick) On March 30, 2008, revision 3 was released and it expanded compatibility for some games ran with the M33 Driver. This included games such as Harvest Moon and Patapon. (Which only ran under the Sony NP9660 loader) Unofficial 3.93 M33 On March 20, 2008, a patch for 3.90 M33-2 was released for both Phats and Slims. This allowed users to "upgrade" their systems to an unofficial version of 3.93 M33. Created by Yellow_Rain, this patch updates the PSP to use the latest version of POPSloader that was changed in 3.93. Also, Yellow_Rain reverse-engineered and updated the popcorn.prx from 3.90 M33 as well as hex-edited the vshctrl.prx file so that the system software relays 3.93 M33 instead of 3.90 M33-2. (Which included the 'GetVersion' opcode) All of the features from 3.90 M33-2 where retained, and it is possible to flash custom flash0 files made for 3.90 M33 to this unofficial version of 3.93 M33. Even though that the patch was successful on both Phats and Slims, the updated Posploader created problems for users on both systems. Users report that PSX games will fail to load. When attempting to bring up the Popsloader menu to switch the version of POPS used, it will fail to load. Due to this, many users felt that this was unsuccessful and ended up downgrading back to 3.90 M33-2. However, some users instead used the last Popstation or the oldest Popstation from 3.02 OE-B, which requires keys.bin, and that has successfully launched PSX eboots.

4.00 M33

On April 28, 2007, MathieulH posted a statement on PSPGen about CFW 3.93 (below) and what will become of 4.00 M33 if 4.00 was ever released. He states: (as translated) "I can't but congratulate the author of this firmware on his excellent work, I wish him good luck in it's continuation, I also find the idea of implementing recovery mode directly from the VSH very interesting and innovative. Concerning M33, no release is actually expected before the release of 4.00 (so one must be patient) and for diverse reasons, the foremost being of course the lack of any new features by Sony in the new firmware updates since 3.90 (at least from my point of view). Team M33 is absolutely not responsible for the creation of custom firmware 3.93. I know the author of the latter but out of respect for his wishes I will not write his name here. Congratulations on this release!" Therefore with this statement, a release of 4.00 M33 will be expected once Sony's official 4.00 firmware is released. However, the time it will take after it is released is unknown.

HX versions

3.72 HX-1

On November 06 2007, homebrew developer "_HellDashX_" released the 3.72HX-1 custom firmware. This custom firmware was made by reverse engineering Dark~AleX's 3.71 M33-2 and then adapting it to the 3.72 firmware. It contains all features from 3.71 M33-2 except the 1.50 kernel extension, which was released shortly after. Also version 2 called 3.72HX-2 has been released.

3.73 HX-1

On November 30 2007, "_HellDashX_" issued a statement that 3.73 HX-1 was created and released on December 12, 2007. This firmware enabled access to the official PSP features and changes, as well the “custom” factor enabling homebrew, etc

GEN Firmware

CFW 3.93

On April 26, 2008 an unknown developer released 3.93 CFW on pspgen.com. This CFW was made with permission from Dark_AleX and others. According to the readme, this CFW now uses the 3.93 kernel, and has added several features. These are the ability to access recovery from the XMB, the ability to make a Pandora Battery (convert/revert battery) from recovery, save savedata in its normal, unencrypted state, and the ability to hide the PSP Mac Address in the XMB. (Changing it to all 0's) Although with the approval of Dark_AleX and Math, a few bugs has arisen. These are minor bugs and does not affect the firmware in any way. Sometimes, the Hide Pic0 in Game Menu and the Hide Mac Address options does not always work. This would require a user to reset their devices in order for it to be fully functional. Also, the CXMB 3.1 plugin cannot work with the Hide Mac Address option from the Recovery-Vsh Menu as it will freeze the System sub-menus in the XMB. However, the firmware has been tested and 3.90 flash0 themes as well as CXMB are known to work properly. Also, the 3.90 IRShell patch can be successfully done enabling users to fully unlock the potential of IRShell. A day later on April 27, 2008, a 1.50 Kernel Addon was released. On May 3, 2008, an new Update (named Update 2) has been made available. Update 2 fixed a bug in the Sony's OSK where pressing SELECT while it was up would freeze the system. Also, Hellcat's Savegame Deemer was removed. However, it can still be used a an ordinary plugin.

3.95 GEN

3.95 GEN is a custom firmware developed by Miriam of PSP-GEN. 3.95 GEN was released on June 01, 2008 at 01:00 pm, (GMT + 1) after being delayed due to server issues. During the delay, Miriam managed to work out most bugs that had existed before the release. This included fixing the Phat's memory limitations, and enabling popsloader to work where it has not previously worked before... The newly added features to 3.95 GEN included vsh-recovery where the recovery menu can be bought up from the XMB. The new recovery menu uses the standard M33 recovery and adds more features such as Pandora Battery creation tools, the ability to hide the MAC Address in the XMB, USB to the UMD. Also, the configuration of Network Update can be changed to search for updates for either GEN firmwares, M33 firmwares, or Sony's official firmwares. Outside of the firmware, the ipl for Slims is patched so units can boot up with a Pandora Battery, as well as load TimeMachine. Popsloader and PSX emulation is fixed and works as long as a user uses the 'popsloader.prx' file included in the download. The use of the Sony updater is still present. However, the battery check, and IDStorage Key checks still exists. However, the ability to download the '395.PBP' from the Internet does not exist anymore. As nids has changed from 3.90/3.93 to 3.95, some plugins may or may not work. Also, the MS read times seemed to be addressed by either Sony or Miriam in this release, as the PSP can read data from the MS in the XMB faster than on 3.80/3.90, even with the 3.71 fatmsmod.prx patch included. Some homebrew such as irShell and NervOS cannot fully work. 3.95 GEN-2 On June 6, 2008, Miriam released 3.95 GEN-2. 3.95 GEN-2 included fixed some of the known bug fixes within the firmware. This update fixed the bug where the PSP will act bricked if the user tried to access the vshMenu when it was turned off from recovery. Also, homebrew compatibility on both the Phat and Slim were increased, and some homebrew such as the latest SNES emulator worked again. On top of that, Phat users were able to use popsloader again since the memory limitation has been addressed and fixed. However, some bugs such as the .at3 file not playing while selecting homebrew and PSP ISOs do not play while on PSX games they do.

Other Custom Firmwares

1.53 Custom Firmware

On 19 February 2007, a custom firmware was released by Eiffel56. This firmware was called 1.53 to avoid confusion between the official 1.51 and 1.52 firmwares compared to this custom version. This version is built for firmware 1.50 loyalists as not every user wished to upgrade to the SE or OE firmwares. This firmware offered many features offered in the 1.50 Proof of Concept firmware by Dark AleX such as a limited recovery mode, autoboot option, custom PRX loading, launching 1.00 Homebrew eBoots, hiding corrupt data icons and starting ISO files from the XMB.

3.40* LE (Leaked Edition)

On August 08 2007, Team Wildcard released a reverse engineered version to the OE Custom firmware source code. The firmware was released after it was leaked from Team Wildcard's servers. The firmware contains all the features of 3.40 OE but contains features such as a new recovery menu,(later dubbed LE Recovery), and in XMB recovery access. Many users complained, since it was not 100% complete, it contained many bugs and glitches. The vast majority of the bugs were addressed in subsequent patches to the original firmware, which also added features such as the automatic detection of which kernel should be used to run homebrew.

Guide No.1 - Downgrading a PSP Slim/Fat from 3.90M33 to 3.80M33-5.(Downgrade releated)

Things you will need :-

To downgrade to 3.80m33 you must first download the desperater del cementario v4 and the Os pandora tool.First format your memory stick using a memory card reader and then Create a Folder called "PSP" on the Blank memory stick pro duo and inside the "PSP" folder create a "GAME" Folder With uppercase letters.then download the 150.PBP,340.PBP and 380.PBP and copy those three into the ROOT of your memory stick.then RUN desperater v.4 from your psp menu.and Once done go into USB Mode and delete these 2 files :- 150.PBP & 340.PBP ONLY.then copy the OS Pandora Tool 0.52 to the "GAME" Folder and Run it from your psp and select convert to service mode aka pandora battery.then Once done remove your psp battery and re-insert it and click "X" then your in 3.80M33-5 .then remove the battery again and plug in a PSP Charger and on the psp and then Insert the battery and go into OS pandora tool again.and select convert to Normal.Thats It.

Guide 2 : Making a Pandora Battery(hardmod) To Install Custom Firmware

Part 1 Making the pandora magic memory stick, (if you aredy have a pandora Magic memory stick, you can skip this part) You need a pandora magic memory stick right? If you don't and you dont have a homebrew PSP, you can get the Magic Memory Stick! First off, You need to have winRAR to download this program, go HEREx (broken link? go HEREx), download winRAR 3.71 and install it, you need to buy it after 45 days or uninstall it, its not free. Anyway, you want to make the Magic Memory stick. You need a Memory stick PRO duo, at least 128 MB (mega bytes) but i suggest a 1GB (giga bytes) put it in your PSP then use this program HEREx. Follow all the on screen instructions,DO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES OR YOU WILL BRICK!!! (Just kidding) if it asks you what selection you want, i suggest universal unbricker PSP slim and fat it will make your PSP and 3.71 M33, but if you want to be greedy, you can just chose regular and just go to 1.50. But thats only for fat, USE THE UNIVERSAL ONE!! your gunna need it later on.... Got the memory stick ready? OK!! (note: if you use it on slim, the screen will not turn on, just watch and look at the WLAN and Memory stick lights until they both blink. then press X to use it. It will show on fat)

Part 2 Making a pandora battery, (If you already have a pandora battery, then you can skip this step) You have the Magic memory stick right? Now all you need is the pandora battery. Ok, sadly, you need a homebrew PSP for this, and there is no easy installer for it... BUT!! You can still Soft Mod a Battery! But only do that if you are an experienced hacker. That will be explained in part2B,Ok first you need a PSP that is Ver. 3.02 OE-A and above, 1.50 P.O.C. and 2.71 SE-A wont work, (or you can try). To see your PSP version, go to your settings, then system settings, then PSP information, I have 3.90 M33-2. Ok Now you know your version, OFW PSP's can't use homebrew. First, DL these Files...150 EBOOT

(380 EBOOT) (340 EBOOT) (360 PSARx) (UPDATE.PBPx). Ok, put all of those files in your memory stick, got that? WHAT?!? Not enough space in your memory stick?!? Those are one of the reasons why i suggest a 1GB memory stick. If you can't fit those files, your out of luck. (sucks don't it?). But if it did fit, your good, Now Download this file and put it in your psp game folder. If you cant find your PSP game folder , the in your root of your memory stick, make a folder, then name it, PSP, then make a folder called GAME in that folder, then put this file in there, (Pandora makerX) ok then exit and run that, only make a Pandora battery, if you know what your doing, you can use the other files, But BEWARE!!!! ok now you got you pandora battery!!!

Part 2B Soft modding PSP battery (FAT AND SLIM!) Ok, you think your screwed because your PSP is official firmware right? WRONG! I'm gunna teach you how to make a pandora battery without a Homebrew PSP! I have pics for this guide, first you need to open your PSP Slim or Fat battery. BELOW.

Ok, your open battery looks like this right? ok if it looks like this and that top thing doesn't flip out, YOUR SCREWED!! AGAIN!!! These are the new kinds of battery's and cannot be soft modded! Not yet anyway.

Lets do PSP slim first! Please look below for fat PSP.

Ok, if your battery, looks like the image below, your good

Ok the slim battery is above right? If you open a slim

Battery and get a green board that flips out, your good.

Cut that little wire were i drew a O to then cut it off!

But Careful for other wires! Here is a Zoom in below(v)

After that, Tape the battery back together

then put it in your psp and see if it worked!

if the green light turns on automatically, it worked.

If it didn't, find what you did wrong. But ok! look below

If you have a fat battery.

Ok, if your battery looks like this below, then your good!

Now See were it is circled? cut that wire, Don't cut any other wires. Tape it back up and you Have your PSP fat pandora battery, test it like you did with your slim! Ok you have a pandora battery! Now you can install your 3.71 m33 or unbrick any PSP!!! ok! now! we will continue in part 3, Installing time machine. But before we do that, if you have a PSP FAT! you ca use this download HERE to play homebrew games!! (ONLY FOR FAT PSP's)!! you must have 150 Eboot in your root before continuing. look above for download. For Firmware updates, please see PSP Custom firmwares.

Part 3 Installing DAX Time Machine & IPL loader.

Ok, you have a CFW PSP? Right? You can play your homebrew games now and your done? right? huh?! Your slim can't take the kernal addon?!? Its true. Due to the new Slim mother boards. You can't use the 1.50 kernal addon for the slim. We have a sulution. The PSP Time Machine!! (recommedned use of Memory stick: 1GB). Ok, First you need to Update your PSP to 3.90 M33-2. HERE if you don't have that firmware. (you must be at 3.52 M33-4 to install.) First you download the 390 Eboot HERE and put it in the same folder. Then Update. Ok now for the Time Machine. Download it HERE then put it in your PSP then GAME folder in your PSP. You then Run it. then you install EVERYTHING!! Don't worry if it days slim or fat. install EVERYTHING!! Now you can exit. "HEY! my battery doesn't do Pandora anymore"!! Dont worry, thats nomal. This is a guide for you to figure these things out! For 1.50 insert your battery while holding the X botton. For 1.50 with 3.40 Modues, Insert battery while holding O. For 3.40 OE-A (Fat only) Hold Triangle while putting in battery. For 3.60 M33 (Slim only) Hold Square while putting in battery. And Finally, for your regular Pandora Menu, Hold UP While Putting in battery!! There! you have just installed your PSP time machine!! For Updates for Pandora. Look Below.
